An Essay on the Value of a Wool Coat

Both a wool coat and a pair of earrings have value. However these values are very different to one another.  The coat has value in functionality- in its ability to shelter us and keep us warm. The value of an adornment object is more complex. We often use jewelry as a way to showcase precious materials. In choosing material for jewelry we are declaring it to have either an aesthetic or inherent value. By cutting holes in a wool coat I am destroying its original value.

I am then using the pieces to create a series of adornment objects. By translating the coat’s value into something entirely different,  I am asking questions about the nature of a valuable object and the history of adornment.
